Some Authors and Webcomics I Like
I like complex worlds that I feel I can inhabit. These authors write books with worlds so big that I feel like I could move right in and would be happy. When my kids ask me what superpower I would want I always say Shifter, which is not really the answer to their question, but if I could shift to a panther, that would be AWESOME!
G. A. Aiken - The Dragon Kin series contains some of the best gender neutral adventure books out there. Her stories are complex and have a strong basis in what it means to be a family. Her heroines are amazing and the Human Queen is Anwyl the Bloody, so what is there not to love.
Jennie Breeden - She writes The Devil's Panties, which is a semi-autobiographical webcomic and she is also the creator of Kilt Blowing at Dragon Con, so she is clearly a genius.
Deanna Chase - She writes several series all set in worlds that are complex and interesting. The romance is great and the women are strong.
Victoria Danann - This author writes the Black Swan Series and has the most interesting take on traveling from one dimension to another I have ever read. Her world is interesting and unique and I love the way she blends science fiction and fantasy.
Shelley Laurensten - This is a shifter world where there are lots of different types of shifters and each group has their own details that are based in the world where that animal really exists so the wild dogs are playful and the bears are serious. This is the same author as G A Aiken and so the world is complex with lots of humor and sex.
Seanan McGuire - She writes books set in the Bay Area and Fairie. She also has a really large cast of characters and a wide variety of races to draw on so that her stories are really deep and fascinating. Her world is more serious than some others, but her heroine, October Day, is witty and fun.
Marissa Meyer - Author of The Lunar Chronicles. She writes amazing books that twist traditional fairy tales and mix them with science fiction in such a unique way. Her stories are full of strong girls and boys with a depth that makes it essential to read all of them.
Ilona Andrews - If you have not read these books you should. Kate Daniels is an amazing heroine who kicks ass and gets her ass kicked, but she keeps getting back up again, which is always fun to read about.
Cake Wreks - A blog that celebrates the humor that can be found from professionally created and unintentionally humorous cakes.
Jeph Jaques - He writes the webcomic Questionable Content and wins the honor of being the lone male on this list, so he should feel really special.....hahahaha. His drawing is great, his cast of characters is varied and his story lines are interesting. He also works hard to make sure his cast of characters are ethnically diverse, which is much appreciated by me and his legion of fans.
